ABOUT THE CLUB

Welcome to the official Alumni Football Club Website.

Alumni Football Club was founded in 2004 by a group of University of Liverpool graduates looking to play football once their student days were behind them.

Originally formed predominantly with players from the University's Law and Medical Schools, Alumni FC grew to encompass graduates from all three of Liverpool's universities, as well as the odd player not blessed with a degree.

In the summer of 2004 an application was made to the Liverpool Old Boys Amateur Football League (LOBAL) and a place in Division 5 was awarded to the fledgling club. Despite losing its very first competitive game (agonisingly 5-4 after trailing Liobians 4-1 and levelling the tie at 4-4), the club's place at the bottom rung of the LOBAL ladder was brief. Only two further league defeats followed and promotion as champions was achieved. Cup competitions brought further success in that first season as Alumni accomplished a memorable 9-8 penalty shoot-out victory over Kingsford in the Grimshaw Cup Final at Wyncote.

Alumni found the step up to the 4th Division difficult to start with, losing two of their first three games. However, points were only conceded in two more games and the club once again finished the season decorated as league champions and Bushell Cup Winners.

After the 'Double Double' Division 3 was bypassed as Alumni were promoted into LOBAL Division 2. The team remained unbeaten in the league until March and again secured yet another league and cup double, the Bill Hughes cup being won via a dramatic penalty shootout victory against rivals Cardinal Newman.

In 2007/2008 Alumni FC finished their first season in the top division of LOBAL in 3rd place which was an excellent achievement for all concerned. A disappointing early exit in the County Cup was followed by a narrow defeat on penalties in the quarter final of the Marlborough Trophy (our one and only divisional cup defeat in our history). However, the season ended on a high as Alumni secured yet another trophy in its short history by defeating Cardinal Newman 3-1 (AET) in the final of the Senior Shield.

Season five would be even more rewarding. A fantastic County Cup run would end in defeat in the final (the only cup defeat all season). Alumni retained the Senior Shield title with a 2 - 0 victory over Roby College, and won the Marlborough Trophy with a last-gasp winner in extra-time to win 2-1 against the mighty Naylorsfield. The league race would be shrouded in controversy, but suffice to say Alumni lost the fewest games, beat the "champions" twice and would have another trophy in the cabinet except for a bizarre and unfair u-turn in the league rules. The season ended on a high when Alumni qualified for the national Lucozade Cup Finals and went on to win the competition at Carrington Training Ground (home of MUFC), beating teams from significantly higher levels of non-league football on the way.

Season 6 has seen the club expand and rise further. The 1st XI made it 6 promotions in as many years, taking the title in the Liverpool FA Division 2 South, winning the last 10 league games straight. It means a move up the non-league ladder to Liverpool FA Division 1 and a move to the highest county Cup (and potential games against Bootle, Marine or AFC Liverpool). As importantly, the season saw the birth of a 2nd XI, and after an inevitable slow start the 2nd XI settled into life in LOBAL DIvision 3, finishing a respectable 9th.

The 2nd XI will become stronger and better next season, and its hoped both teams will pick up yet more titles in 2010/2011 ...
